Bob (B) is a doctor who needs to consult with a specialist, Alice
(A). He will need to send the patient's exam results to Alice across
the Internet (I). However, new regulations under the Health Insurance
Portability and Accountability Act - HIPAA - require that all such
exchanges of patient information be handled in a secure manner.
The Internet, of course, is far from secure. Once transmitted, the
data is open to anyone who cares to look at it. It also is transferred
across several servers on its way to Alice. Any of these can keep
a copy of this sensitive data.
Since neither Bob nor Alice have secure servers, to meet HIPAA compliance,
they need another way of insuring their patient's privacy. The answer
is, of course, encryption.
Bob will encipher (or encrypt) the files (E). Then he will send
them by regular email across the Internet. Alice will then reverse
the process to decipher them (D). The patient's private health information
has been protected through the entire trip.
Here's how easy it is to do:
Bob simply opens the Songs of the Universe Encryptor, selects a
key or password and then drags the patient files onto the Songs
of The Universe logo. Encryption is usually completed in less than
one second! He can now email them over an open Internet connection
without worry that anyone else will be able to see them.
Let's take a look at the Songs of the Universe encryption process.
