Songs of the Universe

Quick Tour

Here is the actual encryption process. You will be amazed at how fast and easy it is to use. You can encrypt any kind of file: graphics, text, executables or any other file, including zip files.

SOTU can give a new password every time you encrypt a file. But you can change password at will, or for stronger encryption use the SOTU Key Library to generate a One Time Pad key.

Encrypting Files

First, a little bit about encryption keys. Keys are always referred to by the number of 'bits' they contain. However, they are never used that way. They are always used in 8-bit blocks called bytes, and bytes are easiest to understand as the letters you type on the keyboard. One letter = one byte.

Songs of the Universe allows you to type in any number between 8 and 256 for a key length. This is the same as 64 to 2048 bits, but don't worry about it. All you need to know is that the bigger the key, the harder it is to crack your messages.

The strongest encryption on the Internet today is 128 bit SSL. SSL is what is used when you make credit card purchases over the Internet. That is 16 typed characters, so let's use that. It will make for a simple example.

Open Songs of the Universe Encryptor. In the 'Key Length' window, type in '16'. You will see the number of bits this equates to displayed next to the window. Now select 'Get New Key'.

Songs of the Universe will go into your One-Time Pad Key Library and get a totally random, 128 bit key and place it in the password field. You could also just type in a 16 character password, but random keys are much more difficult to crack, since they use keys that are hard to type from the keyboard.

OK, you are all set. Let's encrypt your files:

Highlight the files you want to encrypt. Then just drag and drop them onto the Songs of the Universe logo. You could also zip them into one archive before encrypting! That way, they are double encrypted!

Now just attach them to an email and send them off!

Decryption

Decryption is just as simple as encryption. When you receive an encrypted message or file, just highlight it and drag it onto the Songs of the Universe logo. The file is decrypted.

You will now have two copies of the original message. One is the encrypted one, (the cipher text) and the other is the decrypted one, which you can actually read (called the plain text). You may elect to keep one or both of these files. If you want to keep the cipher text on your disk, you will also need to keep the key that decrypts it.

So, before the window closes, you will be asked if you want to save the key used to decrypt this message. You can open the cipher text at any time by just dropping it onto the Songs of the Universe logo.

That's it. Probably the simplest and most powerful encryption program on the market today.
